Leave Admission Processes entirely to Universities.

An educationist, Mr Ike Onyechere, has called on the Federal Government to decentralise admission process by allowing tertiary institutions to select their candidates without input from any coordinating body.

Onyechere told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that tertiary institutions should be given complete autonomy to select applicants for specific programmes based on their criteria.

“I think the admission of students should be deregulated."
“Tertiary institutions should be allowed to admit their students in line with the law setting them up."
“I find it a little bit surprising that a university is free to admit candidates for master’s and doctorate degrees but cannot admit for undergraduate degrees; it doesn’t make sense to me,’’ he said.

Onyechere, Chairman, Exam Ethics Marshals International, an NGO, said tertiary institutions should be given complete autonomy to operate, as obtained most developing and developed countries.

“What happens is that about 500 tertiary institutions in this country will immediately create about 500,000 jobs because they will have full-fledged departments to make and process admissions,” Onyechere said.

NAN recalls that former Vice-Chancellor of Veritas University, Prof. Mike Kwanashie, had called for complete autonomy to enable tertiary institutions.
